Tent poles have to be carefully chosen. You must pay particular attention to the poles if you go camping a lot. Failure to have sturdy poles may result to the inability of the tent to stand. Having said that, you have to determine the right poles you need when you go shopping for it.
One excellent pole material is aluminum. Tents that are of the dome and tunnel type make use of aluminum. Why? This has something to do with the excellent resilience of aluminum that is required to create that certain dome shape characteristic of a tent for camping. Even if it is fairly resilient, it is equally sturdy. Compared to all other pole materials, aluminum is considered to be the most weather resistant of all. But one particular pitfall is that aluminum has the potential to corrode.
Steel is another pole material. In a lot of different objects, this material is preferred over aluminum because of its durability. Stainless steel in particular can withstand rust, corrosion and other sources of damage. It is however often quite rigid and therefore cannot be used as dome poles. They are often used for frame tents instead. Steel is ideal for this tent type because its weight and strength keep a frame tent stable.
You can also make use of plastic. Plastic is famous for its affordability that is why it is popular among many campers. Usually, plastic poles are not the average plastic material. They are made even sturdier than the usual plastic. Then again, even the most superior plastic tent pole is not immune to damage. Plastic tent poles are the most easily damaged among all materials.
Fiberglass is also a top material for tent poles. This type is considered to be heavy-duty and long lasting. As such, they are most favored to be used in making kayaks. On the contrary, they are not always ideal for tent poles. Instead, they are ideal for a three season tent. A particular drawback is that they are not suited for cold weather conditions. Fiberglass has the tendency to crack under extremely cold weather.
Nowadays, carbon fiber is used to make tent poles. It is deemed to be the sturdiest of all. Then again, it is the most expensive. Better quality tent poles may be made from carbon fiber but it has not replaced aluminum as the best among all the materials used for tent poles.
Poles can get damaged. This is regardless of material type. Sometimes poles just snap when they have been in use for some time or when they are improperly set up. You might be able to repair a damaged pole. Your tent repair kit may contain the necessary tools. Some campers however simply settle for makeshift splints and some duct tape. You can’t rely forever on this temporary solution though. You should consider replacing your poles as soon as you are back from camping.
Tents utterly require tent poles. The poles are responsible for the framework of the tent and have a direct effect for camping leisure. Make sure that you inspect them periodically for probable wearing out and have it changed right away.
